Home Remedies to Manage Dry Eyes

Home Remedies to Manage Dry Eyes

Dry eyes are commonly a result of insufficient tear production that leads to increased friction between the eyelids and the eyeball. This results in irritation and mild pain or, in some cases, dry eyes can also become a chronic syndrome with symptoms that can affect vision. There are several over the counter medications and prescription eye drops that can provide relief. Alternatively, the following home remedies for dry eyes can also help manage mild to moderate discomforts.

Warm compress
A warm compress placed gently over your eyes can improve the natural flow of lubricants that keep your eyeballs and eyelids from drying up. The liquid is, in fact, just a simple mixture of water, oil, and mucus in a set viscosity that coats the eyeballs. It reduces any friction between the eyelids. A warm washcloth placed over your eyelids for a good minute can unclog the oil-glands and counter any inflammation that is causing the irritation. The moisture and heat both help stimulate the flow of the oils. You can do this a couple of times during the day to relieve the pressure while exploring alternative home remedies for dry eyes.

Protect from the elements
Extreme weather conditions and dry elements in the surroundings affect the lubrication. The wind might look good in your hair while riding into the sunset on the expressway but it is certainly not suitable for your delicate eyeballs. So wear quality wraparound sunglasses that divert those sharp gusts effectively and prevent the lubricants from drying out. Remember, a moist and humid environment offers the perfect balance of the elements. This effect can also be mimicked indoors using a good humidifier.

Staying hydrated
Water is the most essential part of the mix with the oils and mucus to create a perfect smooth texture that lubricates the eyeball. Drinking water regularly throughout the day helps replenish this requirement, especially in a dry or extremely hot climate where the risk of dry eyes is high. But ensure you don’t consume excess fluids that are rich in caffeine or alcohol, as these beverages are no good. Additionally, you can stay hydrated by eating some water-rich fruits and veggies like watermelon and cucumbers.

Blink frequently
If you are working on the computer for long hours, you might often experience a mild irritation on the eyeball signaling the surface has gone dry. The blinking action helps spread the natural lubrication evenly across the eyeballs. And this is one of the simplest home remedies for dry eyes; all you have to do is blink frequently. Another effective way to ensure lubrication is to close your eyes for a good 20 seconds after every 20 minutes (ophthalmologists refer to this as the 20-20 method). This action further prompts a gentle release of tears.

Changes in diet
Among home remedies for dry eyes, making changes in your diet is one of the effective ones. Foods that are rich in omega 3 fatty acids and oils help improve the quantity and quality of tears produced naturally in the body.
